Full Moon in Virgo 2025: Mud season, and the "safety" of Davy Jones' locker

Pisces season, in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, means the beginning of mud season. Sudden increases in temperature followed by rapid freezes, wet and heavy snow followed by rain can make mountain snow packs melt almost over night- leading to flash floods. Fog banks can become impenetrable as the dew point is met and the air saturates. Then, it all re-freezes and the ruts in the mud become rock hard- until the next thaw, and the muck becomes deeper and nearly impassible.

Paved roads often fall victim to the same forces. Potholes appear and frost heaves shift and undercut sections of roads.

When we speak of roads, Mercury makes the commerce (along with Hecate at the crossroads), but Saturn provides the structure. He rules the structured wintry Signs of Capricorn and Aquarius: in Pisces he has lost his icy grip on the Life Force. At the same time, the smell of running sap fills the air and the impending explosion of Life is palpable. The strengthening Sun and Jupiter provide the will to expand. The Goddess, Venus, is exalted here.

In Pisces season, the relationship between Earth and Water is probably at its most problematic.

The Virgo Full Moon is the metaphorical meeting of Earth and Water.

Every Full Moon brings to light the relationship between opposing signs in the Zodiac. Opposition reveals an axial, elemental and cosmological difference, but this is not exactly discord, which we see in the square. The opposition is a balance between extremes on the same spoke of a wheel within the same grouping: Air opposes Fire (both masculine or yang), and Water opposes Earth (both feminine, or yin).

On March 14 at about 2:53 am EST, the Moon will be Full in earthy Virgo in the 24th/25th degree. The Moon will be less than 4 degrees applying to Ketu, the tail of the Dragon, also known as the South Node, making this a total lunar eclipse. The Sun will be in the same relative position to the North Node, Rahu, and will be separating 2 degrees from Saturn and applying less than 6 degrees to Neptune.

The final degrees of any Sign are considered malefic, since it is a time of change. The ancients knew, as we do today, that change often sucks.

This is reflected in the rulership scheme of terms or bounds, a Hellenistic astrological technique that divides each Sign into 5 uneven and irregular sections. Each section is assigned to one of the 5 non-luminary planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury), and it is said that the ruling planet of the bound makes the rules for that territory, subordinate to the Sign ruler. The final terms of every Sign are ruled by either Mars or Saturn.

Mars and Saturn move things toward extremes. They demand careful and thoughtful action, and that we have the will and strength to resist things that could blow us up, or shrink us.

At the time of this lunation, Sun, Moon, Saturn, Neptune and the Head and Tail of the Dragon will all be either in Mars’ or Saturn’s terms or bounds. The last decan of Pisces is ruled doubly by Mars, according to the Chaldean order and triplicity.

The malefics will be dictating the rules. The Head and Tail of the Dragon will add extra shade, and Neptune will add corrosive emotional brine and oceanic power.

There will be so many potentially negative things weighing on this lunation, it’s easy to lose count. Even though a double negative linguistically makes a positive, in reality things are never that simple. Multiple negative forces exerting influence can be more like a crossfire than a simple negation of competing forces.

A MANIFESTATION OF THE CONFLICT BETWEEN EARTH AND SEA IN THE AGE OF AIR: PIRACY

The overall archetypal story of this eclipse is the legend of Davy Jones, owner of the metaphorical locker of the Deep. Davy Jones was a pirate, perhaps a historical figure who became the known as the devil of the deep, patron and host of those who are lost at sea. Davy Jones’ locker was known (with great poetic irony) as a place of “safety” for anyone or anything lost in the depths.

The celestial setting around the 2025 Pisces/ Virgo lunation provides this type of “safety”.

The pirate routinely flies false flags, his alliances and conflicts shift with the tides. Human trafficking and cultishness are par for the course of the buccaneer: the pirate ship was often a floating cult of personality formed around a powerful figure who had the innate character and cut-throat cunning and drive to survive close quarters and perpetual danger.

Remembering the larger 200 year cycle of Great Conjunctions between Jupiter and Saturn, we have recently entered the Age of Air. For approximately 196 years, Jupiter and Saturn will convene only in Air Signs. This sets us on a course of destabilization and decentralization, a new paradigm of Ideas and Idealism.
